Houdini mastered the art of escape – not only from physical chains, but from poverty and the social constraints of a humble immigrant origin. His life story appeals to the universal longing for acceptance with which we all can identify. Adrien Brody as Houdini is simply captivating. I myself was obsessed with Houdini as a kid. The name Harry Houdini conjures up a lot of illusions, no pun intended. Brody stars in History’s two-part miniseres Houdini airing Monday, Sept.
Houdini was the quintessential magician/illusionist of his time. We have had very few movies that have done a good job portraying prestidigitation, the exceptions being Christopher Nolan‘s THE PRESTIGE and Neil Burger‘s THE ILLUSIONIST. HOUDINI, if given the same budget as HATFIELDS & MCCOYS, could be another must see. "What Houdini was doing, and what he represented to everyone who saw him," says Brody, "was overcoming obstacles.Having Brody as the headliner certainly helps as well. But he also suggests the reason Houdini was so popular in his day, and remains a popular reference across all of American culture these many years later, was more fundamental. That all adds to the complexity of the character, says Brody. And yet at the same time he was insecure." She becomes increasingly concerned about his obsession with his work,and tries to prevent him from doing anything too dangerous - which is, of course, exactly what he constantly aspires to do. She works in his act, joining his long-time assistant Jim Collins (Evan Jones) in setting the stage and figuratively rolling the drums for Houdini's entrance. "Houdini" also spends considerable time on Houdini's relationship with his wife Bess (Kristen Connolly), whom he met when she was a showgirl and married days later.
